Reflecting the perfect harmony of music and technology, the Istanbul edition of the Sónar Festival takes the support of Digilogue again in its fourth year.
Zorlu PSM
March 6-7, 2020
Lalin Akalan, Artistic Director of Digilogue, is taking over the curation of Sónar+D Istanbul, which hosts the festival’s AV shows and a series of events that bring the technology of the future together with creativity. A reflection of digilogue’s work all year round, Sónar+D takes on the festival’s daytime schedule. Taking place in the Digilogue Space, Sky Lounge and Meydan Foyer areas at Zorlu PSM, Sónar+D features 70 different events, from interactive installations reflecting the interaction of technology with different disciplines to artist conversations.
Curated by Lalin Akalan, Sónar+D Istanbul, in a way, reflects the experimental collaborations that Digilogue has been collaborating with creative industries throughout the year. We have the opportunity to observe once again how technology, combined with art, shapes the future through workshops and exhibitions and interviews organized within the scope of the festival.
We experience the immensity of the imagination of the artists and scientists of the new world in an audiovisual way. As we meet new music technologies, we have the opportunity to see how artificial intelligence creates and gives life to an art form in the auditory world. Continuing its existence within festivals, academic structures and technology fields, Digilogue is the biggest contributor to the development of this special program of Sónar+D Istanbul.
An international convention, Sónar+D Istanbul brings many extraordinary audiovisual performances focused on the experience and atmosphere of the teams creating their own software to Zorlu PSM in real time. In Sónar, which is not just a music festival, collaborations that produce art by exceeding the lines with the power of the word ‘discovery’ take place within Sonar+D.
Augmented reality is the basis of the studies that have come to the fore this year. The Sky Lounge will be transformed into a giant reality space, making the festival feel like it’s in an another world. Sónar+D, which supports the artists of the local scene of new media art and opens its doors to them, also underlines the digital heritage. ‘Göbeklitepe VR Experience’ and ‘Journey to the World of Osman Hamdi Bey’ will provide a digital reflection of the light of yesterday to the present.

Sónar Istanbul’s night program, which spans two days, runs in a stream dominated by AV shows and performance arts. Names such as Kelly Moran, Max Cooper and Darren Cunnigham, who reflect the coexistence of music and technology in a striking language, stand out on the night programme. With his one-man show “Intentional Particle”, Hiroaki Umeda reveals how the limits of performance are enforced by technology. In Intentional Particle, Umeda prefers to perceive particles in the space as active particles rather than seeing them as static molecules, visualizing the extracts of particles in the outer space. One of the most remarkable areas of the festival, Sonar Screen reveals an experience that embraces all participants with performances supported by Digilogue from day one. The Live Choir performance, which was performed on this stage two nights in a row, is an audiovisual experience by the Chromas Choir, Tolga Böyük, Amir Ahmadoghlu and Ece Özalp in the curation of Lalin Akalan. Inspired by Kanye West’s Sunday Services and Gospel music, the performance leaves a sumptuous collective spirit in the foyer area in the center of Sonar Istanbul. With feelings of humanity and unity, we all need to open up our hearts a little bit.
We have been witnessing how the bottomless world of technology, combined with music, creates wonders with Sónar Istanbul for four years. See you next time in 2021…
